Visual Journal: New Year in New York

Ah, yes. New Year's Eve. The holiday I love to hate, yet I whimsically decided to spend it in one of the most popular destinations to celebrate it.

The previous two times I'd been to New York featured summer weather, so it was oddly refreshing to experience the city in the wintertime. Despite a 'blizzard' that the media dubbed a 'bomb cyclone' and temperatures as cold as -15C, the city still felt more than alive. Having checked off the touristy stuff on previous trips, I could finally just chill and enjoy being in the city. And maybe that's why I enjoyed this visit so much; I wasn't just trying to run from place to place, stressed out as to whether I'd have enough time to see everything. It was the first time I saw New York in a new light, one in which the frenetic pace of the city was more inspiring than anxiety-inducing.

With ten days in the Big Apple, I could just slow down. Here are some of my favourite spots that we checked out:

  • Root & Bone (Alphabet City, East Village): Southern comfort food + cocktails
  • Ilili (Flatiron): Trendy, modern Lebanese spot with upscale sharing plates
  • Cha Cha Matcha (Midtown): Aesthetic cafe specializing in green tea and baked goods
  • Eataly (Flatiron District): Italian marketplace with cafes, restaurants, and cooking demos
  • Arturo's (Greenwich Village): Coal oven pizza, old school charm, live jazz music
  • Gotan (TriBeCa): Casual, laid-back brunch joint with lots of open space to do work
  • The Smith (Midtown East): Casual American brasserie with something for everyone

New York is the perfect city for street photography. Every street, corner, and neighbourhood offers endless opportunities for interesting perspectives. Even though the city has been shot to death, there's still always so many unique moments that you can capture. The snow added another layer of intrigue, and overall I'm really happy with the photos from this trip!
